Disagreeing with the Death Penalty
There are so many things wrong with the Death Penalty, both morally and physically. To murder someone and then justify it under the law is incredibly hypocritical. You can't discourage something and then condone it just because its under the jurisdiction of the law. By that logic you could go ahead and say "i'm going to rape your daughter because you raped mine" or "i'm going to kill your son because you killed mine". If everyone live by that then the would would turn very chaotic.
Many people believe that if the death penalty exists then it'll act as a deterrent for other crimes. If someone knows that their action will cost them their life, well then they won't do it. But there have been no scientific studies that have found convincing evidence that Capital Punishment deters crime. There is also the fact that the people committing the crimes, such as murder, have the mindset that they won’t ever be caught. They believe that detection overall will be avoided, therefore the Death Penalty is completely out of the question and apart from hit men very few people will ever be in that mindset when committing a crime. A survey between homicide rates and the Death Penalty taken in 1988 and updated in 2002, concludes that; “It is not prudent to accept the hypothesis that capital punishment deters the threat and application of the supposedly lesser punishment of life imprisonment. “ – reference: Roger Hood, The Death Penalty: A world wide perspective, Oxford, Clarendon press, third edition, 2002 p.230) A lot of people believe that keeping criminals in prison for life, without parol, results in people paying more tax. Therefore the death penalty is effective as it gets rid of the inmate in faster time. But in actual fact Capital Punishment happens to be very expensive to tax payers. All democratic nations suggest that every human being is considered innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt. Certain safeguards are needed for Capital Punishment trials, as it is a person’s life at hand. This means that trials have to run for longer periods of time, as they are so extensive. The cost of just one Capital Punishment trial often runs into the millions of dollars as it is also an obligation of the government that when a life and death issue is at sake, the prosecuted receive the best defense team tax payers money can buy.
